Curiosity is a character strength. Curiosity leads to raising the game- How good is that?
No matter your position, or the level you hold in the game of life-curiosity moves you to
the beyond. We serve as the player, the coach, and the teammate- from Pee-Wee to
Pro, Amateur to Expert, on the journey of life. For some people, the game has just
begun, and for others, it just may be the halftime. There is always another level.
Think about it- exploring, discovering, the quest for new information & experiences, are
all curiosity elements.
When seeking to raise the game, leaning into the strength of curiosity serves individuals
well. As go-getters, high achievers, trailblazers, players, coaches, and teammates,
being open to new experiences should become like a trademark. Pursue what is
innovative and different, explore the complex, understanding, being open for what
makes our existence significance is curiosity. Over and over again, people deploy or
redeploy their assets and resources, seeking to raise the game.
Let me share a story about a lady I coached last year, a member of higher education-
she had done all things right in terms of education. She had received exceptional
grades as a youth and remained in school until she received a terminal degree at the
young age of 29. Twenty years later, she had served as a professor, led the
administration at several universities, and transitioned to the President of a small-town
college. She had made remarkable achievements and was now feeling deflated,
uninspired- and curious about what was next for her. Her Breakthrough from our
coaching sessions revealed the euphoria of the accolades from her career had little
meaning, after achieving different levels at different positions. How much higher could
she climb? REMEMBER - THERE IS ALWAYS ANOTHER LEVEL.
Being curious helped her to discover how she could become significant in comparison
to being successful. Her curiosity led her to seek no longer to control the outcomes but
resign to allowing the outcomes to be the result of aspects outside of her control.
Her curiosity led her on a growth journey-a journey she was able to redefine what made
her get up in the mornings.
Curiosity supports seeking and finding greater meaning in life; and embracing uncertain
and new situations. As you reflect on the strength of curiosity, answer the question-
How does curiosity play out across the different domains of your life- family, socializing,
work, & school?
If you are curious about your character strengths -complete the VIA character
